STUART, Fla. -- A 480-pound Martin County woman has died after emergency workers tried to remove her from the couch where she had remained for about six years.

Gayle Laverne Grinds, 40, died Wednesday, after a failed six-hour effort to dislodge her from the couch in her home. Workers say the home was filthy, and Grinds was too large to get up from the couch to even use the bathroom.

Everyone going inside the home had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air.

A preliminary autopsy on the the four-foot, ten-inch woman lists the cause of death as "morbid obesity." But officials want to know more about the circumstances inside the home.

Investigators say Grinds lived with a man named Herman Thomas, who says he tried to take care of her the best he could. He has told them he tried repeatedly to get her up, but simply couldn't. No charges have been filed, but officials are looking into negligence issues.

Emergency workers had to remove some sliding glass doors and lift the couch, with Grinds still on it, to a trailer behind a pickup truck. Removing her from the couch would be too painful, since her body was grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin had literally become one with the sofa and had to be surgically removed.

She died at Martin Memorial Hospital South, still attached to the couch.

Neighbors say they had no idea Grinds lived at the duplex, though they had seen Thomas and some children outside.

I don't and will not eat at McDonalds, for one reason and one reason only. Ok here is what happened. Between the years 95 and 2000 I had a beautiful black Chow dog, he weighted around 90 pounds full grown. I would take him out with me about once a week, and we would stop by Burger King and get a Cheese burger all the way with frys. Oh how he loved Burger King.

Well to make a long story shorter. A new McDonalds started being built across the street. So when it was finished being built I thought that on one of my trips out with my dog, that we would check out the new Mc-Donalds. So I drive up to the the window and ordered a cheese burger all the way, with frys. I look over at my dog and he is already drooling from knowing what is about to get.. LOL..

Ok you guys still with me?

Then I unwrap the the McDonald burger and tore it into 4 or 5 pieces just like I always did the Burger King burger. I put it back on the paper and laid it on the center console like I always did with the other burger.

I looked over at my dog and said here ya go.... It took one smell and did what sounded like between a brup and a gagging sound. hummm ok... I looked at him and said what's wrong, it's a cheese burger. He took another sniff, and I lifted his head, and if looks could speak, with the expression he gave me, he looked as if he was saying, what the shit is that, I am not eating it.. LOL He even had his nose all crinkled up, and his eyes all big looking. Then I told him again to eat it. I also said, what are you sick our something. This time he just turned his head away from me as if he was mad at me. SO I looked at my burger and then I smelled it, I looked back over to my dog and said, well if your not eating it, I'm not eating it either. Let's go back to burger King.

So I tossed the burgers out, and drove over to Burger King. YES he did eat the burger king cheese burger. Hummmmmm with a dogs keen sense of smell it makes you wonder what the meat is really made from..... 8O

I even told the Burger King manger what happened at McDonalds. They gave my dog a free burger everytime we stopped in after that.

Above: Authorities take Ronald McDonald away after they find evidence of his crimes against humanity. Crimes including. Hitler-esque, ritualistic slaughter of millions of animals, Subliminally tricking parents into feeding absolute garbage to their children, and posing as someone who gives a fuck about anything other that "a few billion more sold."

Alas, justice is served, and the world is made a safer place for all of us.[/img]

I read that a few weeks ago on usatoday news site. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/200 ... fing_x.htm

I do know I will never eat another McDonald burger again. I still wonder to this day what my dog smelled in that burger.

Given your dog probably licked his own a-hole without a problem, the McDonalds burger must have been really bad. LOL

I don't know, but I think this dude Herman Thomas should be charged with something. I bet she wasn't able to get her fat ass up to go buy the tons of food she needed to sustain her gargantuan size by her self. I bet Herman boy would make 10-15 trips a day to McDonalds to buy her big-macs, lard and butter.

Yes, let's toss personal responsibilty out the window.
This womans condition is her own responsibilty. From a moral standpoint, I dare say he should have been more proactive in getting her some assistance, and as you say, not been an enabler. But pressing charges on him would be assinine.
