Turkey's Gul says withdraws from president race

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said on Sunday he was withdrawing from the presidential election race after the Islamist-rooted AK Party failed for a second time to secure a quorum in parliament.

"After this time (vote failure) my candidacy is out of the question," Gul told reporters in parliament.

The ruling AK Party failed to obtain the presence of 367 members of parliament to be able to hold a vote on whether to elect Gul as president. He was the only candidate standing.

Seems democracy is good as long it produces pro-western governments......

Seems democracy is good as long it produces pro-western governments......
If you look at the past few years, the so-called Islamists have actually introduced many modern reforms, this all seems a bit ridiculous! :?

So much is being made out of the fact that had either of these leaders become President their wife would have been the first to wear the veil...

It´s the normal biased view ......

When the secular opposition boycotts the government, it´s okay .... The other way round it´s a danger for democracy .... if the Military warns the government to do what the military wants, it´s ok, as long as the government is not pro-western or no pro-capitalistic....
